The Care to Career programme supports Care Leavers aged 18-25 in Suffolk who are not in or are at risk of disengaging from education, employment or training.

Each young person will work with a dedicated mentor, who will offer a person-centred support approach, building confidence, developing employability skills and increasing aspiration to take the practical steps towards achieving their goals.

We are currently looking for volunteers to offer support for an hour or so a week.

As a Care Leaver Mentor, you will provide this direct support on a 1-1 basis with young people, building a trusting relationship through weekly mentoring sessions over 3-6 months. You will learn and understand the young person’s circumstances, strengths, interests, barriers and aspirations to develop and carry out a tailored support plan with them. You will be supported in creating support plans with our Care Leavers Coach, who will carry out the initial conversations with referrers and/or young people to provide you with a solid foundation to begin building a relationship.

Volunteer role, main tasks and responsibilities:

    • Supporting young people to build confidence and self-esteem, identifying their strengths, interests barriers and aspirations,
    • Improving the employability of young people, through skills development, creating/updating CVs etc.
    • Helping with job/course searching and applications,
    • Interview preparation and practice,
    • Support to explore education, training, apprenticeships or volunteering
    • Support to access work experience, taster days, volunteering opportunities or employer experiences
    • Help to understand workplace expectations and routines,
    • Completing accurate and detailed contact reports to ACT staff, including actions completed and outcomes achieved
