Detailed description

Volunteer Role Description

Position: Sub-editor

Background:     Chatterbox produces a talking newspaper every week based on stories from the Norwich Evening News. There are four Chatterbox teams and each team includes about 4 sub-editors.

The sub-editors are provided with marked-up copies of the previous week’s Evening News showing the stories that the team leader/editor has selected for reading. The sub-editors check the text, eliminating errors and inappropriate wording, reducing the length when necessary, and then cutting the stories out and pasting them up ready for the readers to use.

Timing: About 2 hours one Thursday in four. Exact times vary between teams but around 1pm to2.30pm is common.

Responsible to: The week’s team leader (also called the editor).

Location: Chatterbox office, Petersen House, 240 King Street, Norwich NR1 2TT

Detailed description of the work

The aim is to prepare copy for the readers to record. All copy is taken from the Evening News of that week, from the previous Friday to the current Thursday. It is a very rewarding role in a very friendly team. Full training will be given.
