Summary

Enthusiastic, friendly volunteers needed to support patients to engage with games and activities at Carlton Court Hospital, near Lowestoft.

Detailed description

Patients who are in hospital for several weeks can be at risk of deconditioning, where their strength and mobility reduce during their time on the ward due to prolonged periods of time in bed and very limited physical activity. By assisting patients to take part in games and activities that encourage physical movement and mental stimulation, the Activities Volunteers plays an important part in supporting the work of ECCH therapists to promote patient rehabilitation. These activities can also have a positive impact on a patients mood during their stay in hospital. The session usually puts a smile on the faces of all involved!

Key responsibilities include:

  • Helping to set up the Day Room for communal group patient activities and tidy away equipment at the end of the sessions.
  • Depending on staff/volunteer capacity and patient ability, you may take activities to the bedside, so a flexible approach is required.
  • Supporting and encouraging patients to take part in the games and activities available.
  • Engaging patients in conversation.
  • Helping to collect feedback from patients about taking part in the session.

Sessions currently run from 11.00am-1.00pm Monday - Friday. Shifts subject to availability.

This opportunity will suit someone friendly, approachable and enthusiastic. You don't need any previous experience in healthcare, but you will need to be comfortable assisting within a busy ward environment.

You should have good people skills and the willingness to treat all patients, staff etc with politeness, dignity and respect and offer a non-judgemental attitude.

You will need the ability to follow instructions and guidance from staff and to inspire trust and confidence by being reliable and punctual.

This role requires a standard DBS check (at no cost to you). If you have previous convictions these will not necessarily prevent you from volunteering and we would still welcome your application. We assess any criminal record disclosures on a case by case basis and you will be supported through the application process by a volunteer coordinator.
