We're looking for Lead Volunteers to run the shop. If you'd like to be a part of an important project to help your local community we want to hear from you!
Shopmobility is a scheme we are proud of at Equal Lives. It supports people to hire mobility scooters and other mobility aids during their visit to the city, completely free of charge.
We are very excited to be expanding our services so that Shopmobility can open on Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays. On these days, the shop will be managed by volunteers, with Lead Volunteers helping the team provide a welcoming, accessible and well-organised service. If you have retail skills, enjoy working with people, and want to support and empower Disabled people in the local community, we would love you to join our growing team.
Lead Volunteers will be part of the Shopmobility team and will take the lead in the shop on days when no staff are present. Responsibilities include welcoming clients, helping them access mobility equipment and enjoy the city with greater independence, taking phone and email bookings, entering information onto management systems, and supporting the general maintenance of equipment. Volunteers help create a friendly, accessible and well-organised service for customers.
We are based in Chantry Place, previously known as Chapelfield Shopping Centre, and are easily accessible from the city centre and local transport links.
In return for your enthusiasm and dedication, you will receive full training, support, flexible opportunities to build skills, the chance to meet new people, and the pride of doing something important for your local community while helping to run the shop with your team.
Core responsibilities may include:
- Greeting customers and providing a friendly, supportive and welcoming first point of contact.
- Supporting customers to hire the mobility equipment they need during their visit.
- Keeping the shop presentable, accessible and welcoming.
- Helping customers sign up as Shopmobility members and, where appropriate, Equal Lives members.
- Responding to customer queries by telephone, email or social media.
- Taking future bookings for mobility equipment.
- Cleaning mobility equipment when it is returned.
- Logging hires and relevant customer information accurately on the database, in line with training and data protection requirements.
- Handling cash and card donations only where authorised and trained to do so.
- Supporting marketing and promotion of the shop, where appropriate.
- Opening the site and preparing the shop for customers.
- Closing the shop at the end of the day.
- Completing occasional ad hoc tasks that are suitable for the role such as signposting to our other services or to other organisations.
We’ll give you:
- Comprehensive training, including GDPR, safeguarding and data protection.
- The opportunity to choose your days and hours where possible.
- An accessible city centre location.
- A variety of activities to challenge you and develop your skills.
- The opportunity to take on additional responsibilities as you gain experience.
- Specific tasks focusing on the skills you want to gain.
- A friendly and supportive team of staff and volunteers.
This role makes an important contribution by supporting people with mobility issues to access the city and lead more independent lives.
If you are looking for a volunteer role where you can make a real difference while developing transferable skills, this opportunity could be for you.
Reasonable expenses, including travel while undertaking this role, will be reimbursed in line with organisational policy. This includes mileage, currently £0.45 per mile, and parking costs.

About Equal Lives
We are Equal Lives. A disability rights organisation based in Norfolk and Suffolk. We exist to support people of any age who face disabling barriers and we are dedicated to making their voices heard. We are a user led organisation (ULO), meaning we are led by people who access care and support services themselves - with the majority of our board identifying as Disabled.
We believe in supporting people to empower themselves to live independent lives. We do this through valuable services including Information & Advice, Advocacy, Shopmobility and Campaigning.
Our mission for Disabled people’s independence is why we work to the Social Model of Disability. Developed by Disabled people, this model is a progressive way of viewing the world and says that individuals are limited by barriers within society and not by their own impairments or differences. Our aim is to breakdown these disabling barriers and work with people to achieve the life they choose.
