Summary

Felbrigg Hall’s Second-Hand Bookshop is run by volunteers. Our bookshops help the National Trust raise funds for dedicated conservation at Felbrigg.

Detailed description

What is a bookshop Volunteer?

Do you like a good thriller? Or are you more a romantic? Our bookshop volunteers know where to find the poetry section, or the holiday reads, and love helping our visitors to find something they will enjoy.

By getting involved, you could…

•      Inspire visitors to find their next favourite story.

•      Use and develop your customer service skills and experience.

•      Help support our charitable cause.

•      Share your passion for literature.

•      Join an enthusiastic and varied team and make some new friends.

You’d also be joining Europe’s largest conservation charity and the wider National Trust team proudly looking after 780 miles of coastline, over 250,000 hectares of land, over 500 historic houses, castles, ancient monuments, gardens, parks and nature reserves (including lighthouses, villages, pubs and a gold mine!). We are a unique charity welcoming millions of people each year and with a vision to open up places for the benefit of everyone, for ever.

What’s involved?

  • As part of our service principles, making every visitor feel welcome, and being able to answer visitors’ questions about Felbrigg.
  • Having conversations with our customers about our products and thanking those who are making book donations.
  • Supporting the selling of books and other donated items and facilitating payments.
  • Keeping the shop clean and tidy, re-stocking books and keeping displays neat and tidy.
  • You are important in making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible – this includes getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures and being aware of overall security.
  • We are looking for someone to fill our Sunday morning shift 10am - 1pm
  • Being part of a team that may need to adapt and change in response to local needs and National Trust priorities.

We want all our volunteers to feel welcome and to have an equally positive experience when volunteering with us. So, volunteers will:

  • Be provided ongoing support from our VE, Retail and Business Support teams.
  • Be provided the necessary induction, training, equipment and reasonable adjustments to do this role well and safely.
  • Be offered expenses to cover agreed travel costs between home and place of volunteering.
  • Have remote access to support, news and rotas via our volunteer website.

This role will suit you if you …

  • Are excited at the prospect of supporting Felbrigg by generating extra income.
  • Love learning about our stock and enthusiastic about telling people about it.
  • Enjoy handling books – even when they’re a little bit dusty!
  • Are keen to help each customer feel special and find something they like.
  • Are happy to handle money.

All National Trust volunteers will be asked to

  • Respect and uphold the National Trust values whilst volunteering with us.
  • Complete training required of all NT volunteers and any role specific training.
  • Adhere to relevant policies and processes including safeguarding, health and safety, and equality and diversity.
