House Experience Volunteers help us to look after Felbrigg Hall giving everyone a warm welcome, summer volunteering is a great short term way to get involved!

This opportunity is designed to give people a taste of what it’s like to work within a historic house as a National Trust Volunteer or Member of Staff. It’s suited to anyone who has some free time over the School Holidays and can dedicate 4 or more days volunteering with us.

By getting involved, you could:

  • Get to know Felbrigg’s history, learn its secrets, discover new skills and build confidence
  • Gain work experience in the care, presentation and interpretation of a historic house and collection
  • Practice storytelling and visitor welcome
  • Enhance our visitor experience, keeping our places open for ever, for everyone
  • Contribute your time, skills, and enthusiasm to our charitable cause

You’d also be joining Europe’s largest conversation charity and the wider National Trust team proudly looking after 780 miles of coastline, over 250,000 hectares of land, over 500 historic houses, castles, ancient monuments, gardens, parks, and nature reserves (including lighthouses, villages, pubs and a gold mine!). We are a unique charity welcoming millions of people each year and with a vision to open up places for the benefit of everyone, for ever.

What's involved?

  • Creating a warm welcome for everyone who visits
  • Sharing inspirational stories, curious facts and practical information or simply the space for visitors to wander at their own pace
  • Helping visitors understand why we need to take care of special places and sharing how we do that with them
  • Getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures and ensure in the event of an emergency you support visitors to evacuate safely
  • We want all our volunteers to feel welcome and to have an equally positive experience when volunteering with us. So, volunteers will:
  • Be provided with an induction, training, equipment, and reasonable adjustments to do this role well and safely
  • Be offered expenses to cover agreed travel costs between home and place of volunteering

This role will suit you if you are...

  • Aged 16+
  • Full of enthusiasm and enjoy engaging and inspiring visitors of all ages
  • Someone who loves being around people – you will meet a lot each day!
  • Interested in heritage – you do not need to know Felbrigg’s history, but as a House Experience Volunteer you’ll enjoy picking things up
  • No past experience required, all training given, you just need to be keen to learn
  • Have some free time over the summer holidays and want to gain experience for future work or studying

All National Trust volunteers will be asked to

  • Respect and uphold the National Trust values whilst volunteering with us

  • Adhere to relevant policies and processes including safeguarding, health and safety, and equality and diversity.
