About Mile Cross Good Neighbour Scheme

Mile Cross Good Neighbour Scheme exists to strengthen community connections, reduce isolation, and ensure residents have access to practical, friendly support. We are building a network of trusted volunteers who offer neighbourly help from befriending and errands to signposting and community activities. The Volunteer Manager plays a central role in shaping this safe, reliable, and welcoming service.


Role Purpose

To recruit, support, and coordinate volunteers across the organisation, ensuring the scheme operates smoothly, safely, and in line with our values of dignity, inclusion, and community pride. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys bringing people together, building confidence in others, and creating a positive volunteer culture.


Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Promote volunteering opportunities across Mile Cross and the wider Norwich area.
  • Manage enquiries, applications, and informal interviews.
  • Oversee references
  • Deliver clear, friendly inductions and ensure volunteers understand their role and boundaries.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Match volunteers to tasks based on skills, availability, and resident needs.
  • Maintain a simple rota or scheduling system.
  • Ensure volunteers feel supported, valued, and confident in their duties.
  • Provide ongoing communication, updates, and check‑ins.

Training & Development

  • Identify training needs and arrange sessions (e.g., safeguarding, dementia awareness, boundaries, communication).
  • Encourage reflective practice and continuous improvement.

Safeguarding & Risk Management

  • Uphold safeguarding policies and ensure volunteers know how to report concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records of volunteer activity.
  • Escalate issues appropriately to the Operations Manager.

Community Engagement

  • Build positive relationships with residents, partners, and local organisations.
  • Represent the scheme at community events, meetings, and outreach activities.
  • Promote a culture of neighbourliness, respect, and inclusion.

Administration & Reporting

  • Keep volunteer records up to date (training and availability).
  • Support monitoring and evaluation, including simple data collection.
  • Provide brief reports to the Steering Group when required.

Skills & Qualities

  • Warm, approachable, and able to build trust quickly.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Confident in supporting people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Able to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Calm, solution‑focused, and able to work independently.
  • Passionate about community wellbeing and local pride.
