An opportunity to help the community to continue on the journey to create a garden on a previously unused and unmanageable site for people and wildlife to enjoy

The Mile Cross Projects and Events Groups is formed by local residents and organisations working in the area, a place to meet and share ideas, skills and resources. We look for ideas for events or projects expressed by anyone in the community, and help them to realise them.

Alongside local residents and the forming of Green Hearts an idea for this space to be a community garden began. The site at Burges Road should be a family garden but with no fence, a drug dealing hotspot and lots of rubbish - the area was not fit for purpose. The clearing work of unwanted plants and rubbish is so far is complete, we filled 4 skips and the space has really been transformed with the garden now levelled, pathways laid and beds marked out and ready for planting in but we still need lots of help, our aim is for the garden to be accessible so there is a way to go and more to get involved with!

At the moment, we are looking for people to continue help us with the structural and landscaping jobs such as digging a pond, installing the rain catcher, pergolas and planting (we are waiting to hear whether we have the funds to create our own shed too.) We are also looking to have conversations with individuals and organisations to find out what acitvites and groups they would like to see on the garden, help up create a programme for the garden.

We meet on Wednesday afternoons, until 31st March this will be from 1 - 3pm but from April 1st we will meet from 4 - 6 pm.

You will gain experience in creating a garden, connecting with other people who are also taking action for nature and creating a space in which people can connect to nature. Your impact will be huge and felt by so many, allowing the garden to have the best start and be a real asset to the area.

Tasks include:

Levelling and preparing beds

Creating a pond

Building structures

Sowing seeds and growing plants

Helping with research and documenting the project

What you need to know: All tools and safety equipment provided Long sleeves, trousers and boots are encouraged. This is an on-going project and all help is greatly appreciated.
