The Museum has a small shop on site, along with a basic food offer. This role oversees the smooth running of the retail/cafe operation at The Museum.

Where is the role?

The Museum of the Broads is situated at Stalham Staithe and is the only waterside museum of Broadland life. Our volunteers help visitors discover the stories of the Broads, its people, boats and wildlife. The Museum is currently open every day except Monday, 10.00 to 16.00 and for special events, from Easter to end October.

What is the role?

The Museum has a small shop on site, along with a basic food offer (hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, sweets/snacks). There is also an online retail site managed by a third party. All of these make a significant contribution to the income of The Museum, which is a registered charity, run mostly by volunteers.

The role will oversee the smooth running of the retail/cafe operation at The Museum. This will include sourcing/ordering products, updating the EPOS system, displaying products, stock management and pricing (see list below for a more detailed breakdown).

Who are we looking for?

The person we are looking for will have had some retail experience already, perhaps from running their own business. We expect the hours to be a maximum of 6 – 8 hours per week (March to end Oct), worked over days to suit candidate. It would suit someone who is retired, or not working full time, and who wants to use their retail experience in the charity/museum sector.

The retail manager will report to and be supported by the Trustee responsible for retail within the Museum and will work closely with the Administrator.  The retail manager will be supported by a volunteer in a retail support role, who keeps the stock looking presentable and fully stocked. They will liaise with the retail manager when stock levels are low.

Key tasks for the Retail Manager:

1. Sourcing products – finding new products/suppliers for the shop and café and negotiating the best deals with suppliers.

2. Buying products – placing orders for existing products in the shop or café.

3. Deciding prices for new and existing products, in consultation with the Trustee responsible for retail.

4. Entering new or updated products on to Vennersys EPOS system (adding or updating descriptions, prices, barcodes etc..).

5. Setting up and printing out barcodes.

6. Displaying products to best effect.

7. Going to Bookers/Makro/Tesco to buy café related products or delegating this task to others.

8. Stock taking every year, or more frequently, as needed.

Benefits:

Benefits include free entry for volunteers and family to the Museum, invitation to social events, tea/coffee and biscuits whilst on duty, opportunity to find out more about the history and heritage of the Broads, working with a friendly team, experience to add to a CV, and the chance to bring the stories of the Broads alive!

All volunteers are expected to follow Museum Policies and guidance.

The role is purely voluntary and subject to a probationary period of 3 months to ensure that both the museum and the volunteer are happy.

Applications, please message us with relevant experience and why you would like to volunteer for the Museum of The Broads. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
