The Volunteer Discharge Support Driver service plays an increasingly vital role in supporting timely and safe patient discharges.
Volunteer drivers help to accelerate patient flow by transporting individuals with non-complex needs home efficiently, freeing up clinical capacity and providing a valued service in supporting patient-centred discharges.
As a volunteer driver you’ll play a vital role in providing safe, reliable, and friendly transport for passengers who may otherwise struggle get home. You will also deliver medication and equipment.
As with all of our volunteer roles, prospective drivers need to have a calm, warm, empathetic nature and good communications skills in order to provide a welcoming, courteous, supportive presence and friendly conversation during journeys.
What We’re Looking For:
We’re seeking compassionate, reliable individuals who are ready to make a difference. You’ll need:
- To enjoy driving
- To be over 21 years old
- A full, clean, driving licence – D1 category essential
- Good driving skills – Confident, calm, and safety-conscious
- A friendly and patient attitude – Able to support people with a wide range of needs, and remain calm and confident when interacting with members of the public
- Team spirit and flexibility – Willing to work closely with staff and adapt when necessary
- Physical readiness – Comfortable with kneeling, bending, and pushing wheelchairs
- DBS check required – All volunteers must undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check
- Regular availability - Be able to commit to regular volunteering
- Awareness - Be mindful of pedestrians, vulnerable individuals and emergency vehicle access routes, and have the ability to follow safety procedures and instructions
As an NNUH Volunteer Driver, you will be provided with full training, Trust identification, high-visibility jackets for use when operating the vehicle and ongoing support in order to aid you in delivering a much valued and crucial service.
