Strangers’ Hall, a magnificent Tudor house with a delightful 17th century knot garden in Norwich city centre, has been home to many of the city’s leading citizens since the 14th Century. Volunteer Room Guides help us to interpret this special place, engaging with visitors, answering questions, and sharing our passion for its rich history. They also help us to monitor and care for the site and collections within it.
Volunteers are required during opening times- Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays 10am-4pm (during the summer months also Thursday and Fridays). Volunteers can do either morning or afternoon. Seasonal opening times also apply, with some additional openings during the Christmas and Summer periods and museum closure from Christmas until February Half Term.
Details of role:
To ensure a great visitor experience for visitors of all ages to Strangers’ Hall by:
- Welcoming visitors
- Interpreting the site and engaging with visitors
- Providing great customer service
- Being aware of and monitoring security and conservation issues
Skills required:
No previous experience needed but you will need to:
- Have a friendly, approachable and helpful manner
- Be confident and prepared to initiate conversation and interact
- Be punctual and conscientious
- Be a good team member, supporting staff and other volunteers
- Be willing to learn about the history of the site
- Awareness of conservation issues (aware of sunlight damage and pest management issues)

The service also operates the Norwich Castle Study Centre, and a collections centre based at Gressenhall.
In 2018, NMS was recognised by Arts Council England as a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO), and awarded £4,812,680 in direct funding between 2018 and 2022.
Through operating as a joint service, NMS is able to provide central expertise in conservation, design, technical and collections management matters to its sites. The countywide nature of the service provides an additional benefit to visitors through the availability of the Norfolk Museums Pass, which allows passholders unlimited access to NMS sites for 12 months from purchase (subject to seasonal opening at some sites).
