Detailed description

Are you a confident driver who is compassionate and has a desire to make a real difference? Do you enjoy meeting people and being part of a supportive team? If so, volunteering as a driver at Norwich Door to Door could be the perfect role for you. Our volunteer drivers are essential to our service, helping people stay connected and independent.

As a volunteer driver, you’ll play a vital role in providing safe, reliable, and friendly transport for passengers who may otherwise struggle to get out and about. Whether it’s a trip to the shops, a medical appointment, or a social outing, your time and care will help brighten someone’s day.

What You’ll Be Doing:

As a valued member of the Norwich Door to Door team, you’ll help ensure passengers have a safe and comfortable journey. Your role will include:

  • Driving our accessible minibuses – Safely transport passengers to and from their destinations
  • Providing door-to-door support – Assist passengers as they board and disembark, ensuring comfort and dignity
  • Ensuring safety at all times – Carry out vehicle checks, follow safety procedures, and secure mobility aids
  • Working with a Passenger Assistant (PA) – Work as a team with your PA to support passengers throughout the journey
  • Communicating with the office – Stay in touch for route updates
  • Handling fares – Collect and record passenger fares accurately
  • Representing the charity – Be a friendly, respectful, and reassuring presence for all passengers.

What We’re Looking For:

We’re seeking compassionate, reliable individuals who are ready to make a difference. You’ll need:

  • A full, clean driving licence – D1 category essential
  • Good driving skills – Confident, calm, and safety-conscious
  • A friendly and patient attitude – Able to support people with a wide range of needs
  • Team spirit and flexibility – Willing to work closely with PAs and staff and adapt when necessary
  • Physical readiness – Comfortable with kneeling, bending, and pushing wheelchairs
  • DBS check required – All volunteers must undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check

What You’ll Receive:

We value our volunteers and offer a range of benefits to support and thank you:

  • Full training – Including MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme), First Aid, and Dementia Awareness
  • Volunteer Handbook & Risk Assessment guide – Everything you need to feel confident and informed
  • Free uniform – Polo shirt, fleece, and hi-vis jacket provided
  • Flexible hours – Volunteer around your current commitments
  • Social events – DBS check required – All volunteers must undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check
  • Expenses reimbursed – Travel and other approved costs covered.

(This is a voluntary role and as such no reimbursement will be made for any time given to support this activity. Travel costs and any such service-related expenditure incurred on behalf of the charity will be reimbursed).
