NHCT is seeking a new Trustee Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees, to support our work to preserve redundant medieval churches in the city.

Norwich Historic Churches Trust is seeking a Trustee Treasurer to join our Board and support our work in caring for 18 redundant, Grade-I listed, medieval churches in the city. All our churches remain in use through tenant activities, contributing to the rich culture of the city.

As a Treasurer you will play an essential role in the financial governance of the Trust, as we secure funding and manage multiple major restoration projects across the portfolio.

We are seeking people with an understanding of governance and finance (charity, public or private) who can bring strategic insight, commitment and integrity to NHCT’s governance and Board.

Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to NHCT’s purpose, mission, values and behaviours. They will have an interest in the heritage sector, experience and relevant accountancy and/or financial management qualifications, knowledge of current workplace issues and an awareness of the challenges of property management in historic buildings.

The following person specification criteria apply:

• Accountancy and/or financial management qualifications or equivalent,

• Experience as a Director of Finance, Finance Manager or COO with responsibility for finance and financial reporting, ideally in the charity sector,

• Experience of dealing with independent examiners and writing and presenting the annual Trustee report,

• Experience of developing policy and compliance documents, leading on risk assessment,

• Good practical understanding of current regulatory requirements and environment,

• Able to think strategically, synthesize complex information, weigh up options, measure risks and contribute to consensus at Board meetings,

• Able to contribute effectively at meetings,

• Able to represent the charity externally, when asked to do so,

• A good understanding of the communities in which we operate,

• Good network/s in their area of expertise and willingness to tap into their networks, if required, to support the work of the Trust,

• A proven commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion,

• Good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills,

• Good people management skills,

• Integrity and compassion.

Our Board is made up of 12 Trustees, meeting quarterly, supported by three sub-committees, also meeting quarterly in rotation.  As Treasurer, you will chair the Resources Committee, and will be welcome to join the Fundraising and/or Property Management and Heritage Committees. Our preference is for in-person meetings at our HQ in St Martin at Palace church, though hybrid can be available for occasional use. Meetings take place on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, late afternoon.

You will work closely with the Executive Director and Operations Team, in particular the Finance Officer, though much of this can be achieved over the phone or Teams meetings during office hours.  Routine bank authorisations will be required.
