Summary

Volunteers are required to join the existing team of visitors, carrying out independent scrutiny of Norfolk Constabulary custody facilities.

Detailed description

Working on behalf of the Norfolk Police & Crime Commissioner, Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) are members of the local community who volunteer to visit Norfolk’s Police Investigation Centres (PICs), unannounced and in pairs, to check the treatment and welfare of detainees and deliver effective oversight to ensure a safe environment while providing public reassurance.

They play a valuable role in maintaining public confidence in this important area of policing.

There is a panel of visitors allocated to each of the four Norfolk PICs (Aylsham, Great Yarmouth, Kings Lynn and Wymondham) who make visits on a weekly basis to make sure that detainees are treated fairly and with respect.

A short report of their findings is made prior to leaving the PIC which provides assurance for the PCC that anyone arrested by the police and held in custody is treated fairly and has access to appropriate facilities.

Copies of the reports are provided for the police and the ICVs’ local panel for discussion and follow-up.

This role will provide volunteers with a real insight into the Criminal Justice system and to what is very much hidden part of policing.

All volunteers will receive ongoing training and support to help them on their journey and whether young or old, you will have the opportunity to develop yourself individually as well as making new acquaintances and become a welcome part of a friendly and effective Team.

We view this as a mid to long term commitment due to the training and learning required to carry out the role effectively.

Due to the nature of the role, which will find you working in a live policing environment, you will be required to complete an application and take part in an informal selection process based on an agreed Role Profile. All successful candidates are required to be vetted, irrespective of any certificates currently held.

To request an application pack or to find out more information, please contact Simon Atherton via the page link above.
