Detailed description

Volunteers will help to maintain the beautiful spaces and gardens at the New Priscilla Bacon Lodge, therefore enhancing the experience of patients and visitors The New Priscilla Bacon Lodge, which has been built adjacent to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, is home to a state-of-the-art palliative care unit.

A Head Gardener and a team of dedicated volunteers will ensure there are beautiful spaces for reflection and contemplation. Visitors and Patients can immerse themselves and discover a range of contrasting colours, shapes and textures and maintain a connection to nature. Communal areas such as the dining room, lounges and Chapel will lead onto and look over formal gardens and have views over the wildflower meadows and wider landscape.

Key Responsibilities

1.     Weeding

2.     Deadheading

3.     Cutting back / pruning as needed

4.     Watering

5.     Helping to plant new plants

6. Gathering garden waste

Volunteer profile

A Gardening Volunteer will be reliable and self-motivated and have a good knowledge of gardening.  

In addition they will have/be:

1.     Able to carry out the gardening tasks required

2.     Able and willing to follow instructions re health and safety in using tools

3.     The physical ability to undertake the role, including lifting and moving pots and equipment

4.     Good communication and interpersonal skills

5.     Reliable, punctual and trustworthy

7.     The ability to work as part of a team and accept appropriate supervision and guidance from staff

8.     A flexible approach and attitude

9.     Responsible, mature, honest

10. Willing to treat all patients, relatives, visitors, staff and other volunteers with consideration, politeness, dignity and respect

11. the ability to work as part of a team, on your own and to follow instruction

 

Support

You will be supported by the head gardener, who will be your main point of contact, and by your Volunteer Co-ordinator. 

Tools for the tasks involved will be provided for you.

The new Priscilla Bacon Lodge gardens will be an oasis for patients, their families, and will make a significant contribution to the wellbeing of all who come.

About Priscilla Bacon Lodge NCHC NHS Trust

Priscilla Bacon Lodge has provided Specialist Palliative Care to people around Norfolk for over 40 years. The new Priscilla Bacon Lodge is home to a state-of-the-art palliative care unit. It has been built on an 8-acre site adjacent to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Century Place Colney Norwich NR4 7YA. As well as inpatient beds, a day unit and a wellbeing centre, the Lodge is a hub for community-based services, enabling people to receive care in their own homes. The 8-acre site has given the unique opportunity of delivering the landscape, garden, formal gardens and a wildflower meadow.
