Summary
We are restoring the derelict interior of SHQ West Raynham. All the rooms were in need of redecoration, so there is much scraping and painting to be done.Detailed description
RAF West Raynham closed in 1994 and the Station Head Quarters has not been occupied since that date. For the last 18 months a group of volunteers have been restoring this historic building into a Veterans Centre that serves not only former members of the armed forces and emergency services but also the community as a whole. Many of our volunteers are non veterans who are keen to see this magnificent building put back into use.
Fortunately, the building was constructed to a very high standard so although 30 years of neglect have not done it any favours, it will not be impossible to sensitively restore the interior. Much has already been achieved and many of the rooms have already been put back into use but we would welcome anyone with a few hours to spare so we may continue this work at an accelerated pace.
No great skills are required as all the rooms are of painted plaster that needs to be cleaned, stripped and repainted. There are many large rooms with high ceilings that require redecoration and it can be a matter of great satisfaction to see a room transformed from dereliction and brought back into use.
We are a very friendly team that welcome new volunteers so why not come over for a tour of the building to see what it is all about? A warm welcome and a coffee and cake are guaranteed! We are open on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday between 10.00 and 4.00,
