If you have some catering experience and would like to be part of our welcoming cafe at the heart of our recovery support community, please get in touch!

Catering and/or Barista Volunteer

Would you like to volunteer in our kitchen and barista bar café?

This is a great opportunity to be part of our amazing recovery support community and use your skills and enthusiasm to make a difference!

The Matthew Project is a welcoming and vibrant place for building community, providing support, and helping to develop the confidence and skills of those in recovery from substance misuse.

We are looking for volunteers to support the Next Steps Recovery Team to enable service users to learn new skills in catering and café work for either self-development and enjoyment and/or to increase their employability.

Our award-winning Centre in Norwich includes a fully equipped kitchen and barista bar café.We serve lunches on Tue, Wed and Thur, and at the weekend; our barista bar is open every day.

We recognise that developing new skills helps to increase someone’s confidence, makes a positive contribution to their ongoing recovery.   Therefore, we are looking for volunteers who can encourage people to join in and make them feel comfortable by providing a supportive environment.

Tasks may include:

  • Assisting the Catering staff in the production of meals and refreshments during the day.
  • Being the barista, serving coffees and teas.
  • Maintaining outstanding levels of customer service.
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety and hygiene in the kitchen and barista bar. TMP will provide food standards training, when required.

You will be offered a lunch in our café on the days you volunteer (when the kitchen is open).

Personal qualities are very important to volunteering roles.   You will need to be reliable, friendly, enthusiastic, and have a positive attitude to life.  We also value good listening and great communication skills.  These all need to be coupled with a commitment to substance misuse recovery principles.

The application process will include an interview, referencing and checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service.

If you are interested in volunteering with us, please visit our volunteering webpage for more information.

About The Matthew Project

Our work benefits a wide range of people from a wide range of different backgrounds. We help these beneficiaries to achieve better physical and mental health, better relationships with others, and overall better quality of life, along with access to more opportunities.

As well as the individuals themselves, our work also creates social change and improvements to the local community in a range of different ways. These include improved family relationships and friendships, reductions in drug/alcohol misuse, reduced strain on local health and wellbeing services, reductions in rates of offending, and improved skills and employment outcomes for our service users, all of which help to regenerate the local community.
