We are looking for caring and passionate people who want to make a difference by volunteering in doctors' surgeries and Dental Practices.

To support a welcoming and inclusive environment in the practice by engaging with patients, offering guidance, and signposting to local services. The role also involves helping patients with digital check-in, maintaining patient information displays, guiding patients around the building (particularly in larger practices), offering companionship, and providing light refreshments to staff where needed. This role plays a key part in improving the patient and staff experience by supporting smooth practice operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Welcome and engage with patients in the waiting area, offering a friendly and reassuring presence.
  • Signpost patients to relevant local support services, community groups, or health and wellbeing resources.
  • Assist patients with using the digital check-in or self-booking system.
  • Maintain notice boards and leaflet stands, ensuring information is up-to-date and tidy.
  • Offer informal companionship to patients, especially those who are anxious, isolated, or vulnerable.
  • Guide patients to the correct area, room, or department in large practice settings.
  • Contact and engage with Language Line Interpretation in advance of appointments to create a more streamlined appointment for patients and clinical staff. 
  • Provide light refreshments to GP practice staff teams, where appropriate.
  • Always maintain a professional and respectful manner.
  • Adhere to all practice policies and guidelines in safeguarding, infection control, and confidentiality. Full training will be provided prior to starting as a Volunteer. 
  • Work collaboratively with practice staff and fellow volunteers to support the smooth running of the practice.

Boundaries and Safeguards:

  • All Volunteers will be required to consent to an Enhanced DBS Check. 
  • Volunteers will not provide clinical advice or handle personal or sensitive patient information.
  • Any patient concerns or issues will be referred to the appropriate member of staff.
  • Tasks involving refreshments will follow hygiene and safety protocols.
  • Volunteers are not responsible for managing patient flow in clinical areas.

Purpose of the Role:

  • Creates a welcoming and inclusive environment for all patients.
  • Reduces patient anxiety through friendly interaction and guidance.
  • Increases patient awareness of community services and health resources.
  • Frees up staff time by assisting with basic non-clinical and administrative tasks.
  • Supports better organisation and patient flow in larger practice settings.
  • Enhances the overall patient experience at the point of entry
