Summary

Join our weekly Grow with Us gardening project — gentle activities, friendly community, supportive environment, wellbeing in the beautiful Walled Garden.

Detailed description

Love the outdoors? Passionate about people? Curious about gardening?

If this sounds like you, we’d love to welcome you as a Volunteer Gardener at Wolterton!

This is your chance to be part of something exciting—a brand-new programme and a wonderful volunteer community in one of Norfolk’s oldest walled gardens. Nestled in 500 acres of parkland, we are building a small team of enthusiastic, friendly volunteers to help revitalize our beautiful Walled Garden, creating a space for everyone to enjoy now and for generations to come.

You’ll get hands-on with practical tasks that nurture plants, herbs, fruits, vegetables, and borders—supporting wildlife and creating a thriving garden. And here’s the best part: the produce you help grow could one day become ingredients for an on-site restaurant, making it truly local and sustainable!

Why join us?

✔ Fresh air and nature

✔ Learn new gardening skills

✔ Make friends and be part of a community

✔ Help create something amazing for the future

Outline of activities include:

  • Planting, pruning and weeding
  • Tidying of borders and pathways
  • Sowing & propagating
  • Harvesting
  •  To incorporate environmentally friendly practices in the garden and surrounding spaces

Personal qualities and experience:

  • Basic gardening knowledge is preferable, but not essential
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • Reasonably fit and willing to work in all weather, the role will require kneeling and some light lifting
  • Have positive, organised and flexible approach to work
  • You are 18 or above
  • Can work as a team and understand the importance of a well-made cup of tea!

What you can expect:

  • A fun and exciting environment to meet new people and learn new skills
  • Opportunity to work alongside and learn from a well-respected and knowledgeable gardening team
  • Work in one of Norfolk’s largest and oldest walled gardens
  • Tools and equipment provided
  • Refreshments

Time Commitment:

The Walled Garden volunteer sessions will run weekly on a Wednesday from 10am to 1pm (March to October inclusive) with a shared bring-your-own picnic community lunch at 1pm.

Sessions will be weather dependent, and you will be notified of a cancellation of a session no later than 24 hours in advance.

We would like volunteers to join with the intention of being able to commit to an average of 3 weeks a month (we understand about holidays and sickness etc). We are asking for volunteers to commit and attend regularly so we create a supportive community amongst our volunteers.

We are offering taster sessions on 11th & 18th March. These will run as a typical session, and will give you the chance to see if this project is the right fit for you.

During the taster sessions we will answer any questions you may have and provide information about to how to apply to be a regular volunteer of this project, as detailed below.

Please complete the form to register your interest and indicate which taster session you can attend. We will be in touch to confirm availability.
