Summary
The Digital Scanning Volunteers will scan posters, drawings and watercolour images from the museums’ collections to allow public access via the web.Detailed description
The Digital Scanning Volunteers will scan posters, drawings and watercolour images from the museums’ collections to allow public access via the web.
The museum has a duty to collect, preserve and make available to the public material evidence of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk’s past. The image collection at King’s Lynn Museums provides a fascinating glimpse of our town and area’s past. Currently the collection is housed at the museum and store but the opportunity exists for scanning these images to make them available online on the internet to a far wider audience through our collections database.
This is a 12-week volunteering opportunity, January to April 2025 and volunteers should be committed to attending all sessions (except for illness, holidays etc).
This opportunity will take place on Thursdays from 16th January- Thursday 3rd April, 10am-1pm.
This opportunity takes place at Museum Offices, King’s Lynn Town Hall which is accessible only by stairs, unfortunately there is no lift.
Unfortunately we are unable to offer travel expenses.
What's involved?
Volunteers will work with museum staff to:
- Scan selected paper artefacts (which may include prints, drawings, watercolours, documents, and photos)
- Save scans using appropriate file names in the correct location on the computer.
- Use collections database to link the catalogue record to the correct image
Skills required:
- Computer literate and ability to work with databases
- Patience
- Attention to detail
- Reliability to complete the task
- Punctuality and good attendance
- Ability to work in a team
- Ability to work independently
Why get involved?
This is an exciting opportunity for people wanting to get experience of working hands-on with museum collections.
This role would suit someone who enjoys using scanning equipment to create good quality images, who likes working with computers & databases, enjoys working with images, has an interest in art and/or historical documents.
Training will be provided in the following areas:
- Object handling.
- Norfolk County Council essential online training courses, including data protection.
- MODES collections management system (database) training.
