Summary
Volunteer GCSE tutor for young asylum seeking people and refugees in Norwich.Detailed description
Norwich International Youth Project is a small charity which supports young people in Norfolk aged 11-25 who are seeking asylum, have refugee status or are otherwise displaced from their country of origin.
We hold weekly English classes for young people, run by our experienced ESOL teacher (every Tuesday, 5-6.30pm). In addition to this, we are also looking to connect our young people to GCSE English tutors, for 1-to-1 or small group tutoring during our English classes. We are looking for volunteer tutors aged 23 or over and who are available for at least 6 months and who are comfortable communicating with young people from diverse backgrounds. If you do not have a recent DBS or recent safeguarding training then NIYP will pay for this.
Volunteers are expected to:
-Commit to one weekly tutoring session for a minimum of 6 months
-Hold a teaching qualification or have significant tutoring/teaching experience (e.g. TEFL/CELTA, PGCE)
-Work alongside the ESOL teacher and young person, to deliver tutoring sessions designed to meet the young person's specific English needs
-Make tutoring sessions, welcoming, safe and fun for young people
-Attend occasional volunteer meetings and training (including safeguarding training)
-Follow NIYP code of conduct and safeguarding policies
What's in it for you?
-This is a rewarding opportunity to help young refugees and asylum-seeking people achieve a life changing qualification.
-Help young people receive 1-to-1 support, who otherwise wouldn't be able to access it.
-Fun and engaging sessions, building trust relationships with motivated young people.
-You would be part of a small, friendly team of staff and volunteers at NIYP.
-There may be training and networking opportunities which contribute to professional development.
If this sounds good to you then please click 'join' and then fill in our volunteer application form to help us get an idea of your interests, motivations and availability. Thanks!
