Summary
We’re looking for someone who brings a balance of head and heart, a strategic leader who believes in grassroots change and the power of human connection.
Detailed description
As we enter our third year, we’re taking things to the next level, Social Moments is evolving. Our founding trustees have been with us since day one, people with huge hearts and lived experience who believed in the vision before it even had a name.
We’re putting stronger systems in place, defining our first ever long-term strategy, and shaping how we grow sustainably while keeping our community spirit alive.
We need a Chair of Trustees who can help us bridge that gap, someone with experience, perspective and heart who can guide us through this next stage with confidence, compassion and clarity.
This is our first strategy. It’s a pivotal moment, moving from passion and delivery and combining that with structure and purpose.
We need someone to help us answer the big questions:
- What exactly are we here to do?
- How do we stay true to our mission as we grow?
- How do we hold ourselves accountable while staying human and kind?
We envision a different future, one where families, regardless of circumstance, don’t have to face everything alone. A world where families can thrive, feel connected to their community, and are fully in control of their lives.
The Role
The Chair will lead the Board of Trustees to ensure Social Moments is governed effectively, operating with integrity, and delivering on our mission. They’ll work in close partnership with the CEO to ensure the charity continues to make a meaningful impact in the communities we serve.
Key responsibilities include:
- Working alongside the CEO to shape, review and embed Social Moments’ first long-term strategy and business plan, ensuring decisions are rooted in evidence, community insight and clear organisational priorities.
- Leading the Board in fulfilling its governance responsibilities and ensuring Social Moments is legally compliant, financially sound and strategically aligned with it’s purpose.
- Supporting the development and recruitment of new trustees to broaden the Board’s skills, perspectives and lived experience.
Supporting the CEO
- Providing formal line-management support to the CEO, including regular one to one meetings focused on progress, priorities, well being and organisational leadership.
- Holding the CEO accountable for delivering the charity’s goals, upholding its values, and ensuring that Social Moments operates for the benefit of its members and the wider public.
- Act as a critical friend, offering constructive challenge, open dialogue, and a safe space for reflection as the CEO leads a fast moving emotionally dynamic organisation.
- Support the CEO to balance ambition with capacity, ensuring decisions are sustainable and rooted in long term impact.
- Acting as an ambassador and advocate for Social Moments, helping raise our profile, widen our influence and strengthen partnerships across Norfolk.
- Support a passionate, instinctive and community rooted team to translate their energy and lived experience insight into a clear strategic vision and mission that can be confidently communicated to partners, funders and the people of Norfolk.
- Ensure robust risk management, financial oversight and organisational policies are in place and actively reviewed.
- Chairing Board meetings in a way that encourages open, inclusive discussion, healthy challenges and shared decision making.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience of being a trustee (Chair experience highly desirable)
- A collaborative, inclusive leadership style
- Strategic thinking with the ability to translate vision into action
- Confidence in providing both support and constructive challenge
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- A genuine connection to our mission of helping families feel less alone
- A strong commitment to kindness, equity, inclusion, and learning
Qualities and Attributes that we’re looking for
- Enthusiasm for Social Moments’ vision and belief in the power of community
- Ability to think creatively, strategically, and independently
- Commitment to kindness, transparency and collaboration
- Willingness to lead according to our values: listening, learning, and welcoming
- Understanding of good governance and charity leadership
- Integrity, accountability, and compassion.
Terms of Appointment
- Term: 5 years (this is under review for a 3 year term which is renewable for one term)
- Time Commitment: Approximately one day per month, including:
- Four quarterly Board meetings (held remotely or locally, often in a friendly pub near Rackheath!)
- Monthly check-ins with the CEO
- Occasional ad hoc support when needed
- One or two half-day annual strategy sessions
