Summary
Appropriate Adults support young people and vulnerable adults during police interview, ensuring their rights are upheld and their well-being is looked after.Detailed description
We are currently in the process of recruiting Appropriate Adults (AA’s) based at your local Police Investigation Centre. AAs support young people or vulnerable adults who have been detained in custody. As an AA you would be present during an interview or other police procedure, at your local Police Investigation Centre, where you would ensure that due process is followed and is understood by the detainee and that any wellbeing issues for the vulnerable person are being addressed. AAs are independent of the Police, social care or solicitors.
The ACT AA Service operates 7 days a week on a shift and rota basis. Our shifts run 9am – 1pm, 1pm – 5pm and 5pm – 10pm Monday – Sunday! The mix of daytime, evening and weekend shifts makes it an ideal volunteering opportunity to fit in around other commitments. You are able to choose slots in advance that are convenient for you.
The rota is sent out a month in advance so you can select your availability as it suits you – any availability that you are able to give would be greatly appreciated however we do ask for you to offer a shift a week as a minimum if at all possible. Some of our volunteers are happy to do a day a week or more so there is plenty of opportunity to get stuck in, although we appreciate that people are also busy and we are as accommodating as we can be to allow for ever changing lifestyles and commitments.
You will receive full training and be supported by the team at Anglia Care Trust. You will be able to attend Police interviews with experienced volunteers until you feel comfortable to work on your own.
All mileage expenses are covered at 45p a mile.
Our Volunteer team is drawn from a range of backgrounds, with an equally wide range of life experiences: nurses, social workers & parent’s right through to retired Police Inspectors and even criminology students. We welcome all applications even if you feel you have no relevant professional experience, if you are the right person with the right mind set, we will support you through training, shadowing and supervision.
A number of our volunteers have found volunteering to be a stepping-stone into a paid role, recently we have recruited 6 of our volunteers into paid roles ranging from our housing service to children & young people’s services. For many people volunteering has opened doors to new and exciting opportunities.
If you can spare 4 hours a week at an agreeable time for you then we would love to hear from you!
